On August 10, Can Tho City Police detained four people for allegedly stealing dogs and shooting a police officer.
At around 1 a.m. on August 8, An Thanh Commune Police were patrolling Phuoc Hoa A Hamlet.
Officers spotted a group led by Nguyen Tan Loi traveling on two motorbikes and carrying large sacks.
When ordered to stop for inspection, the group refused and sped away. The suspects threw away the sacks before fleeing.
During the pursuit, one suspect used a homemade gun to fire at the police officers. The bullet struck Senior Lieutenant Tran Ngoc Loi in the right side of his chest.
His colleagues took him to Can Tho Central General Hospital for emergency treatment.
His condition was later reported to be stable and not life-threatening.
The suspects continued to flee after the shooting. That evening, police arrested Nguyen Tan Loi and Nguyen Hoang My.
Le Minh Toan and Tran Phuc Hau were subsequently arrested. The four suspects are between 22 and 46 years old. Police seized four homemade guns allegedly used to shoot and capture dogs.
They also recovered three dead dogs and other related evidence. Can Tho City Police are continuing to investigate the case and determine each suspect’s role.
Police leaders visited Senior Lieutenant Tran Ngoc Loi at the hospital. The case is being handled in accordance with the law.
